What is KNX?

KNX: INTRODUCTION

MORE COMFORT, MORE SAFETY, MORE ENERGY SAVING: THE DEMAND FOR BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IS CONTINUALLY INCREASING.

Whether it is a single-family home or an office complex, the demand for comfort and flexibility for the management of air treatment, lighting and access control is increasing. At the same time, the more efficient use of energy is becoming increasingly important. More comfort and safety coupled with lower energy consumption is only possible with intelligent control and control systems. The disadvantage, however, is that more cabling is required from the sensors and actuators to the control and control centers. This massive cabling translates into higher design and installation costs, an increased risk of fire, in short, rising costs.

THE ANSWER: KNX - WORLDWIDE THE ONLY OPEN STANDARD FOR RESIDENTIAL AND BUILDING AUTOMATION
To ensure data transfer to and from all components of the building automation system, a system is needed that solves the problem of isolated subsystems by ensuring that all of these components can communicate with each other, leaving them, as it were, the same "language" to speak. There is good news because this system exists: KNX. The KNX standard is based on more than 24 years of experience, thanks in part to the KNX predecessor systems: EIB, EHS and BatiBUS. By connecting all bus participants via the KNX media (twisted pair, radio frequency, power line or IP / Ethernet), information can be exchanged. Bus participants are divided into two categories: sensors and actuators. There are bus participants for all possible application areas, a few examples: lighting, sun protection, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, security, personal alarm, water control, energy management and energy meters, telecommunications and consumer electronics. For a good understanding: all these functions are performed by means of the uniform KNX system without additional auxiliary equipment.

KNX: MEANING

WORLD MEANS

Worldwide references: KNX is everywhere in the world of home and building automation. Several millions of well-functioning installations are located not only in Europe but also in the Far East, North and South America - proof of the success of the KNX approach. More than 370 KNX members worldwide offer nearly 7000 KNX-certified products for different application areas.

OPEN STANDARD MEANS

KNX is recognized as an International Standard (ISO / IEC 14543-3), as a European Standard (CENELEC EN 50090 and CEN EN 13321-1) and as a Chinese Standeard (GB / T 20965). The future is therefore guaranteed with KNX. KNX products from different manufacturers can be perfectly combined with each other - this effortless collaboration and seamless integratability are achieved by using. KNX trademark guaranteed. Therefore, KNX is the only open STANDARD worldwide for all applications of home and building automation.

HOUSE AND BUILDING AUTOMATION MEANS

A big plus for every type of building: from the office complex to the average household. No matter what type of building, KNX offers completely new options for building management at an acceptable cost. KNX offers smart solutions while conventional installation technologies can only achieve this with considerable effort. All applications in a house or building can be controlled with a single touch panel. From heating, ventilation and access control to household appliances - KNX makes completely new ways of increasing comfort, security, and energy saving in homes and buildings possible..

KNX: ONE SINGLE APPROACH WITH DIFFERENT ADVANTAGES

Regardless of where, KNX brings demonstrable benefits for architects, designers and contractors, and above all for the owners and / or users of these buildings.

  • Lighting and heating are only switched on when really needed, for example on the basis of time profiles and / or physical presence, in order to save energy and therefore money. Furthermore, lighting can also be controlled automatically on the basis of the available daylight intensity, in order to actually reduce the energy consumption for lighting to the strict minimum (only where necessary will the lighting be switched on).
  • Saving time Connecting all communication equipment via one bus saves both design and installation time. With the unique manufacturer and application independent Engineering Tool Software (ETS) you can use m.b.v. KNX-certified products, installations designed, optimized and configured. Because the tool is manufacturer-independent, system integrators can easily combine products from different manufacturers and for different communication media (twisted pair, radio frequency, power line or IP / Ethernet) in one installation.
  • Flexible and future-oriented
A KNX installation can be adapted for new applications in a very simple way, even expansion does not cause any problems. New equipment (bus participants) can be easily linked to an existing installation.

KNX ASSOCIATION: YOUR WARRANTY FOR A GLOBAL STANDARD!

The driving force behind KNX is KNX Association, a group of leading companies active in many areas of home and building automation. The KNX Association currently has more than 370 members, representing more than 80% of the equipment sold in Europe for this area of application. These companies promote, as a common goal, the development of building automation systems in general and KNX as the worldwide STANDARD for all applications for home and building automation. KNX Association has entered into partnership agreements with more than 44,000 installers in 128 countries, with more than 100 technical universities and with more than 300 training centers.

KNX = SECURE: the way to protect your installations

The KNX Association, as an association of manufacturers, took up the subject of security at an early stage under the title ‘KNX Secure’. Nevertheless, specification and implementation took several years – a major reason being the complexity of the KNX protocol, for which group addressing, which is essential for the entire KNX system, is quite a challenge for secure encryption. Security is its main goal!
